update: the engine grenaded this morning after throwing a few timing related codes for the dealer.

:-(

To their credit, Hyundai have been following the Oppo ethos so far: they’ve been excellent. I think we’re looking at a long block. I’ll know more tomorrow. G‘night all.

I’m having a problem with my ‘14 Elantra GT. Tonight, pulling away from a left hand stoplight, I was treated to a slight loss of power which seemed to quickly resolve itself. I thought it was odd but since it was brief and transient, I chalked it up to my imagination.

About a mile later as I was coasting downhill into my neighborhood, it started idling extremely roughly and then died pulling into my driveway, with a brief glimmer of a low oil light as it stalled (which I assume was from low oil pressure due to the revs dropping).

It never threw a CEL. Just for fun I checked the oil, noted that it was toward the low end of the stick but not extreme and added half a quart of 5W-20. I waited a few minutes and tried to start the car. It struggled to stay running and then died after a second. I’ll have it towed to the dealer (it’s still under warranty) in the morning.

Any guesses on how borked it is? What relevant info or questions should I have ready?

DI pressure pump, or pressure regulator... Or maybe, if you’re lucky a bad crank angle sensor... Any of those SHOULD throw a CEL though, so you might have a dead ECM....

1.) Probably not an oil related issue

2.) No CEL, so just a WAG. I’d say something fuel related.

could be bad fuel or fuel pressure related problem. odd there’s no CEL.

fuel system. dead pump or something

I figured oil starvation was unlikely as I’d just checked the oil last week before a road trip, and it was fine.

Looks like 4 of us posted “fuel system” independently of each other, so that may be it.

I get the impression that this is not a mortal wound. It still starts but won’t idle or rev. It sputters along and then dies after a second. That feels like a fuel system issue, and actually reminds me of a problem I had with a fuel pressure reg on a car when I was younger.

Edit: I can has grammar!

yeah, the lack of a CEL is a head scratcher, I’m sticking with fuel pressure issues too, though.

I’m pretty sure we have a winner. I love consensus- I’ll post an update once I have a firm diagnosis tomorrow. On the plus side, I had a meeting at 8 tomorrow morning that I’ll be missing now, so that’s a nice silver lining.

I’m betting it threw a CEL as it died coming into the driveway- every idiot light on the dash was illuminated.

Maybe spark plugs? I don’t think that would throw a CEL. I’ve only had bad enough spark plugs to affect performance once and it was mainly on acceleration.

Either way it’s easy to check and cheap if it’s the issue.

Wow, that new and the engine already died? That sounds flukey to me as I’ve never heard of this happening to any other newer Hyundais....do they know what caused it?

I don’t know yet. I should hear something more definitive later today. From what he said about timing, I’m suspecting it’a top end, but that’s just an uninformed guess.

Hyundais have, for the most part, been great daily drivers for my family. I was a little sad my wife insisted on a subie instead of a genesis last time around. But shit happens, and that’s where I’m really glad to have a solid, long term working relationship with the dealership where we’ve bought three hyundais over the years. They’ve been nothing short of fantastic.

Well, hope it all works out to you having a brandy new engine in that beast! Glad it didn’t happen whilst you were driving somewhere at a high rate of speed, too.

Almost all newer cars with cam and crank sensors can tell when they are out of phase. The computer knows especially on variable valve timing vehicles.

Good deal , have known 2-3 Hyundai/Kia owners denied warranty because timing belt wasn’t changed at interval. You should be fine.

I don’t have it at work. I did find the 132 vin checker tool though, I’ll run the vin through when I get home. Hyundai’s website said it’s accents and sonatas with 2.4 na and 2.0 turbo mills- mine is a 2.0 na which doesn’t seem to be part of this recall.

Our driveway looks like a Hyundai dealership as well - I was the first with my 2009 Accent hatchback in Midnight Gray Metallic, then mom and my brother both got Accent sedans, a ‘10 and a ‘09, respectively.

Mom’s sedan is the same color as mine, but a year newer (so she gets the only year that gen of Accent had blue gauge lighting!) and bro’s is the same year as mine, but burgundy and a sedan. I have the only one with a stick tho! :D :P
